Sorry It Doesn't Count

The Seattle Storm became WNBA champions last night and congratulations are due to the team. I caught the post-game celebration on ESPN2 and they kept talking about how this was Seattle's first professional championship in 25 years. What? Nope sorry! Winning the WNBA championship does not count! The MLB, NFL, NBA, and NHL are the only professional leagues that matter. The WNBA is in that who cares tier with the MLS. I mean the Storm beat a team that plays its games at a casino. Hell, the Seattle Thunderbirds winning the Memorial Cup would be closer to counting for me than this. Ichiro's hits record this year is a bigger deal. The Seahawks making the playoffs last year was a bigger deal. Sorry the WNBA just doesn't count. Maybe that's because I really do think a top notch high school boy's basketball team could probably beat the Storm. Or I just don't enjoy women's sports. But I suspect that the only people that think it does count were at Key Arena last night. And how sad is it that this years WNBA finals were the first ever to sell out every game? If selling out the finals is a big deal then you haven't moved up to the major leagues.

Interesting perspective on tier 2 leagues. I agree much of it is rinky-dink. But it has to start somewhere. And the assumption that only the established sports and leagues are worth watching or following is what keeps sports in general so unbelievably bland.

How often do we watch the same highlight reels backed by the same stupid music, voiced over by the same overweight wannabe-jock in an ill-fitting sport coat? At some point, sports has got to mean more.

So as trivial as the WNBA may seem, it at least represents the potential that someday, we'll get to enjoy some variety in the sports we watch, and the people who play them.

....said I as NHL rinks across the continent remained shuttered.

Even though I'm not a fan of the WNBA I am glad it is starting to succeed. If i had a daughter I think I'd be come a fan, because those women make great role models. I think my dislike for the WNBA is likely a result of the unrelenting cross promotion it gets during NBA events. When I'm watching the NBA draft I really dont need to see an interview with Tamika Catchings.

That said there is nothing i would like to see more is mainstream success for the MLS but that

The NHL lockout is a huge bummer. I hate that the only Stanley Cup final this year may be on my XBox. Salary caps offend my libertarian streak. Too bad the owners can't see how the baseball owners have used a little self imposed fiscal disapline to keep salaries reasonable without a cap.
