Sin City

I am skeptical of pretty much all comic book movies. If you try to judge them against the comics, you'll only find disappointment. Like Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell's From Hell went from being a meditation on the history Masonry, London, and humanity itself on the page to be a goofy Jack the Ripper whodunnit with Johnny Depp on the big screen. Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez's Sin City however is very a different beast.

It's not so much an adaptation of the comics as it is a direct translation. The movie is exactly like the comics and its exhilarating. I think the idea of total digital filmaking is really neat but too often the technical feats are exciting but the films are awful, like Sky Captain. That is definitely not the case with Sin City. Of course along with the strengths of the material it has the flaws (hackneyed dialog, thin characters) of Frank Miller's books as well. But ultimately its one of the funnest (and hideously violent) movies I've see in a good long while.
